KDays is a fantastic family-friendly event that brings together rides, games, music, and food, all while celebrating over 130 years of local heritage. 

One of the highlights for me was the Discovery Zone, where I could get hands-on and interactive. 

The Indigenous Experience was also special, with unique crafts and delicious food, and I couldn’t resist picking up some KDays merchandise from the EXPO Centre.

I remember the excitement of the Cariwest parade, where performers danced in bright, colourful costumes, all set to the lively beats of calypso music.

Edmonton Heritage Festival

The Heritage Festival is a three-day event that features over 70 cultural pavilions showcasing international food, crafts, and performances. This festival allows visitors to engage with local community members and learn about their traditions.

I got to try dishes like spicy Fijian curry and listen to traditional African drumming. 

It was also a great opportunity for me to volunteer, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the festival runs while connecting with others and celebrating cultural diversity.

Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival features over 200 indoor shows and 20+ outdoor performances across 38 venues. It attracts over 550,000 attendees, artists, and volunteers, with something new to enjoy at every turn.

I’ve seen some great performances, like the Jambo Brothers, whose acrobatics amazed the crowd. 

Between shows, I love relaxing at the Fringe Grounds Café, where I grab a bite, read a book, or play a board game.

TD Edmonton International Jazz Festival

The Thousand Faces Festival is a multidisciplinary arts event celebrating Edmonton’s cultural diversity through myth-inspired art, dance, theatre, and cuisine. The festival supports the 35//50 initiative, focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

At the Myth Country Fair, a part of the festival, my family enjoyed the interactive theatre experience and the South Indian folk dance by Usha Kala Niketan. And of course, the free ice cream was a hit with everyone!

Edmonton Folk Music Festival

I’ve been to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival a few times, and it’s always a highlight of the summer. I had a great time catching a mix of performances and workshops and sipping a cold drink in the beer garden after a busy day.

With over 2,700 volunteers, it offers a range of food vendors and a CD tent where you can purchase albums from the performers. Volunteers help with various tasks, including food service and stage setup, contributing to affordable ticket prices.

Taste of Edmonton, the largest food festival in Western Canada, showcases over 170 dishes from more than 50 local restaurants and food trucks. It features live music throughout the day and offers dishes priced between 2 and 5 tickets each.

I’ve always loved the lively vibe at the festival, especially the bike tour that takes me to explore local artisan goods. 

The Night of Artists was another standout, where I got to appreciate the beautiful creations on display.

I recently tried a Food Bike Tour, and it was a great way to sample local dishes while getting some fresh air. At $129 per person, the tour included three delicious food stops and an e-bike rental, which made the cycling part a breeze.

Now, I’m looking forward to the annual Donut Bike Tour on International Donut Day in June. It’s a 3-hour, easy cycling tour featuring three delicious donuts, beverages, and VIP behind-the-scenes experiences at top local bakeries.

I love walking through Whitemud Ravine Nature Reserve, as it offers a peaceful escape away from the noise of bicycles. I always look forward to reaching Snow Valley, where I can take a break and enjoy a quiet moment by the river.

Edmonton Urban Farm

Edmonton Urban Farm is home to around 300 people from twenty-five independent groups who grow food for their families and communities. The gardens also serve as an outdoor classroom for programs like Urban Farm School and Open Farm Days.

I had the chance to join an event in 2023, where I met local farmers, tasted honey, and explored a vegetable maze. I also tried fresh herbs and edible flowers, interacted with hens and rabbits, and learned about food security and literacy.

Rainbow Valley Campground

I recently took a cruise on the Edmonton Riverboat, a paddlewheel vessel that cruises along the North Saskatchewan River. It operates from May to September, with the ride lasting between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on water levels.

On board, there are various food and drink options, including barbecue, ice cream, and drinks from two bars. Additionally, seating is first come, first serve, with tables and chairs available inside on the lower deck and outside on the top deck.

Between the rides, I love relaxing in the shaded cabanas, especially when I need a break. Sharky’s Grill is my go-to for a snack or meal, offering a good variety to keep me going throughout the day.

Alberta Free Fishing Days

Alberta Free Fishing Days let you fish without a licence twice a year, including summer’s National Fishing Week. It’s an ideal time for families to try fishing while observing standard regulations.

In Edmonton, Hermitage Park Pond is stocked annually with rainbow and brown trout. For river fishing, the North Saskatchewan River is an option, though fish consumption guidelines should be followed due to mercury advisories.
