I used to be a hot pot newbie, having only been a handful of times and never really feeling like I was doing it “right.” It took a few more trips, and now I’ve officially embraced the hot pot life!

It’s all about the experience—gathering around a boiling pot of broth where you toss in raw ingredients like meats, veggies, and seafood. I can confidently say it’s one of the best ways to enjoy a meal with friends!

So, if you’ve never been, it’s time to give it a shot. You can try it at any of these fine local restaurants I’ve tried!

Shoo Loong Kan Hot Pot is a popular restaurant known for its authentic Sichuan-style hot pot. With a stylish ambiance and quality ingredients, it offers a flavorful and enjoyable dining experience.

The lunch combo for $58.99 for two was a great deal, though the vegetable selection was limited. My favourite broth was the spicy and mushroom soup, which paired perfectly with the fresh noodles, and the beef short plate was a must-try.

At the end of the meal, they offered free ice cream, which was a nice touch after the rich and spicy flavours. The restaurant had plenty of seating, making it a great spot for a gathering with friends or family, and the service was attentive throughout.

Pro Tip:

If it’s your first time, ask the server for recommendations. They can provide helpful guidance on ordering and preparing condiments.

The Chinese Hot Pot Buffet offers a spacious dining area with over 10,000 sq ft of seating. I like that they provide both individual pots and a common pot, allowing everyone to customize their own hot pot experience while still sharing a meal together.

The buffet had a huge variety, with over 200 items, including meats, seafood, vegetables, and noodles. My favourite part was creating my own sauce from the sauce bar, which added a personal touch to the meal.

Service was quick and attentive, with staff frequently refilling our pots and water glasses. Aside from the hot pot ingredients, they also had a selection of ready-to-eat dishes like fried chicken wings, spare ribs, and crispy spring rolls.

Pro Tip:

Be mindful of the variety of items available and avoid ordering too much at once. Ordering more than you can finish may result in extra charges for wastage!

Address: 7219 104 St NW

Operating Hours: Open daily – 11 AM to 12 AM

Chili Hot Pot has become one of my go-to spots for hot pot, especially during Edmonton’s cold winters. The food selection is similar to other hot pot places, but what makes the difference for me is the atmosphere and overall experience.

The sauce station is well-organized and clearly labelled, making it easy to mix up different flavours. I like to make two sauces—one simple with soy sauce, garlic, and garnishes, and another sweeter blend with hoisin and peanut sauce.

Their soup base selection is impressive, and I always go for the spicy one, which has a good balance of heat. The buffet is packed with fresh meats, veggies, and handmade meat pastes, which cook up tender and flavorful, making them one of my must-order items.

Pro Tip:

If you don’t have a car, getting there can be a bit tricky, but it’s worth the trip. Parking in front is limited, so check the nearby side streets for extra spots.

Address: 9700 105 Ave NW #168

Phone: +1 780 425 8888

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Thursday – 11:30 AM to 10 PM
  • Friday to Sunday – 11:30 AM to 11 PM

Liuyishou Hotpot is a popular hotpot chain that started in Chongqing, China, in 2000. The restaurant lets you cook premium ingredients like marbled beef, wild mushrooms, and seasonal greens in a flavorful broth right at your table.

I celebrated their anniversary by taking part in their hotpot food challenge. For just $36 per person, we got 12 portions of meat and seafood, a plate of egg fried rice, two drinks (normally $5 each), and dessert—an incredible deal for the amount of food!

This challenge was actually cheaper than a regular all-you-can-eat meal, and the best part was that we got to take leftovers home. My friend and I made great progress, and compared to other food challenges we’ve attempted, this one felt surprisingly doable.

Pro Tip:

During YEG Chinatown Dining Week, every January, take advantage of Liuyishou’s $20 lunch combo, which includes a soup base, meats, veggies, and a drink.

97 Hot Pot has been serving YEG since 2014, offering an all-you-can-eat menu that satisfies a wide variety of cravings. The restaurant also has a special lunch menu, making it a great spot for a more affordable option during slower hours.

I visited before Christmas, and even though it was busy, the staff provided excellent service. The food selection was abundant, with great Chinese options like ginger beef and sweet sour chicken, and of course, the hot pot was fun and filling.

The seafood was fresh, and the meat quality was top-notch compared to other places. The broth options were plentiful, and the condiment section was tidy and well-stocked.

Pro Tip:

Look for “chef’s recommendations” on the menu, as they offer great guidance when unsure. Ordering at least one item from each section ensures a balanced meal.

Last week, I satisfied my hot pot craving at Bangkok Restaurant, a hidden gem located in a small strip mall in a residential area. My friend chose the spot based on positive reviews, though we did a few loops around before finally finding it!

The hot pot selection was great, with sliced meats, seafood, and different kinds of balls, plus some more exotic items like blood and gizzards. I especially enjoyed the chilli oil, soya sauce, and white rice that helped complete the meal.

The all-you-can-eat deal is fantastic at $19.50 per person if you’re in a group. With options like half chicken broth and half spicy broth, along with solid pricing and quality food, Bangkok Restaurant definitely offers great value for hot pot lovers.

Pro Tip:

Don’t skip the customizable dessert jellies to wrap up your meal! A mix of grass jelly, liquid sugar, and coconut milk is great for cooling down after a spicy hotpot feast.

I visited Asian Express Hot Pot during Chinatown Dining Week. They offered a set hot pot with a chicken broth base and five items, including sirloin beef slices and white fish balls.

The concept is simple: choose your broth, create your own sauce, and select your items from a wide variety. I usually make two sauces—one with hoisin, sesame, and peanuts, and a lighter one with soy sauce, cilantro, and garlic.

The quality of the food at Asian Express Hot Pot was great, and I enjoyed everything I tried. I’d definitely come back to try their all-you-can-eat option, especially since they offer healthy choices like their vegetarian hot pot for health-conscious diners.

The Melting Pot is Edmonton’s only fondue-style restaurant and has been a staple for almost 10 years. It offers a cozy, romantic atmosphere with intimate booths that make it perfect for a date night, though I went there for a late birthday lunch with a friend.

I really enjoyed their lunch menu, which lets you experience the full fondue experience without the hefty price tag. My friend and I went for the petite luncheon, which included a three-course meal with cheese fondue, salad, and an entree with meats, seafood, and pasta.

The chocolate fondue was definitely the highlight of the meal. We chose the cookies and cream fondue, which was served with an assortment of fruits and desserts—though I ended up just eating the rich chocolate on its own.

Pro Tips:

Make sure to call ahead and mention any gluten-free dietary needs when making a reservation. Inform your server upon arrival to ensure a seamless, gluten-free dining experience.

For a cozy fondue night at home, try ordering Melting Pot To-Go and enjoy their signature cheese and chocolate fondues, fresh salads, and more. Simply follow the provided instructions to reheat your fondues to perfection!

Taste of Szechuan stands out for its thick and heavy soup base, filled with essential spices. The ambiance is quiet and cozy, making it a great spot to enjoy a relaxed hotpot experience.

Their menu offers great lunch specials, with options like 3 meats and 3 veggies for $15.99 or 4 meats and 4 veggies for $19.99. You can choose from a variety of meats, vegetables, and mains like noodles or rice.

I tried the spicy beef tallow broth, which was loaded with chilli flakes and peppercorns for a satisfying heat. The handmade lamb balls were particularly delicious, and the hotpot noodles were perfectly chewy, making for a flavorful and filling meal.

Smilie’s Place offers a unique hot pot experience in Edmonton with its first-of-its-kind hot pot train. The conveyor belt system adds a fun and interactive element, though the dining area is small, so making a reservation is a good idea.

They offer a variety of options, with over 40 ingredients to choose from, including meat, seafood, vegetables, and cooked dishes like chow mein and sweet and sour pork. The lunch combo is $19.95 for seven items, while dinner is all-you-can-eat for $29.95.

During my visit, I enjoyed the tomato and mushroom broths, which were flavorful and perfect for dipping the meats and veggies. The sliced meats, oysters, and other options like beef tripe and beef aorta all made for a delicious, satisfying meal.

Pro Tip:

Be sure to make a reservation, especially during peak hours, as the dining area is small and can fill up quickly.
